Anticipating Drought: A BCG Platinion Hackathon 2026 Case
In northern Zimbabwe, drought doesn't arrive without warning, it creeps in. Rivers run dry earlier each year. Rainy seasons grow harder to predict. And for communities whose lives depend on their land and livestock, a single failed season can mean losing hundreds of animals at once.
For years, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) has worked alongside these communities, building resilience against exactly this kind of shock. But as climate change accelerates, being able to see a drought coming early is becoming just as important as the support that follows it.
This is the real-world challenge behind the second case video for the BCG Platinion Hackathon 2026, developed together with WHH. Under this year's theme, Fighting World Hunger, participants across our global hubs will spend two days using technology, data, and fresh thinking to strengthen early warning efforts already underway on the ground.
It's a case that shows what's possible when local expertise meets outside perspective: not replacing the work already being done, but helping it move faster, earlier, and further.
