25 Years of Enterprise Architecture: From Monoliths to AI-Native Systems

At the turn of the millennium, organizations wrestled with Y2K uncertainties against a backdrop of monolithic systems that dominated the technology landscape. Businesses were only beginning to explore modular structures, service-based models, and the crucial role of IT architects in enabling scalability and flexibility. Around the same time, BCG Platinion was already launching its first engagement, helping clients reimagine how architecture could unlock business value.
The pursuit of speed and agility soon led to the rise of cloud computing. Independent microservices and APIs transformed how systems communicated and deployed, but this agility brought new layers of complexity. Breakthroughs like Kubernetes, edge computing, and multi-cloud strategies helped organizations tame inefficiency, paving the way for faster data transfer and smarter system integration.
As machine learning pipelines matured, AI gained the ability to train itself. What began as isolated experiments grew into today’s generative AI breakthroughs capable of driving insights, decisions, and innovation at scale. Enterprise architecture adapted alongside, giving rise to AI-native platforms that define the current era of intelligent, scalable systems.
BCG Platinion has been part of this journey since its inception 25 years ago, helping organizations navigate complexity and seize opportunities at every stage of their digital transformations. As enterprise architecture continues to evolve, we’ll be there for whatever comes next.
