When Water Costs You Half Your Day: A BCG Platinion Hackathon 2026 Case
For many rural communities in central Kenya, clean water isn't a given, it's a journey. Families often walk up to two hours each way just to reach a source, and on bad days, that source runs low or dries up completely.
Do the math, and it adds up to roughly four hours a day spent solely on fetching water. Four hours that could otherwise go toward school, family, or farming. Multiply that across a household, a village, a region, and the scale of the problem becomes clear: this isn't a minor inconvenience, it's a daily barrier to opportunity.
This is the real-world challenge behind the first case video for the BCG Platinion Hackathon 2026, brought to us by Welthungerhilfe (WHH), one of Germany's largest development organizations. WHH has worked alongside communities like these for years, and this year, we're bringing their on-the-ground insight into the Hackathon itself.
Under this year's theme, Fighting World Hunger, participants across our global hubs will spend two days using technology, data, and fresh thinking to tackle problems communities face every single day in the field.
Water access is just one piece of a much larger picture, but it's a powerful example of how a technical lens can reframe a humanitarian challenge: not as an abstract statistic, but as hours, choices, and opportunities lost.
